Letter.md works with AI through MCP

Connect supported AI clients to find, read, create, and review Letter.md documents.

Letter.md can now be connected to AI tools without turning your documents into a separate copy or export.

What changed

  • Connect ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, and other MCP clients through secure OAuth.
  • Find and read the latest Markdown in your Letter.md workspace.
  • Create new documents, open them in Letter.md, and prepare reviewable suggestions.
  • Built-in authoring and review skills help compatible clients choose documents carefully and keep edits traceable.

Publishing remains an explicit action in Letter.md. Connecting an AI client does not make a document public.

Product update

Publish with teammates and your own domain

A clearer publishing flow for workspace editors, public sites, and custom domains.

Publishing is now easier to manage without adding a separate CMS to your writing workflow.

What changed

  • Workspace editors can publish documents they collaborate on.
  • Publication settings are grouped into a calmer, more compact flow.
  • Custom-domain setup provides clearer status and guided Domain Connect support where available.
  • Public pages update from an explicit published snapshot, so draft edits stay private until you publish again.

Custom-domain availability still depends on your plan and domain provider.

Product update

Work with Letter.md through WebMCP

Let compatible browser agents read the current page, find documents and Assets, and prepare reviewable work with page-scoped permissions.

Letter.md now exposes page-scoped tools to browsers that support WebMCP, without requiring a separate remote MCP connection.

What changed

  • Read the current Markdown, document outline, or selected text.
  • Find and open documents, inspect referenced Assets, and search the Asset library.
  • Create a document or prepare a reviewable suggestion only after an explicit confirmation.
  • Match available tools to the active Workspace membership and document role.
  • Keep direct body edits, deletion, sharing, and publishing outside the WebMCP tool set.

Browsers without WebMCP continue to use Letter.md normally.

Product update

Voice notes

Capture an idea by voice, keep the recording with your document, and review the transcript.

Letter.md now supports voice notes for moments when speaking is easier than typing.

What changed

  • Record a voice note from the iPhone app and keep the audio with your document.
  • Transcribe on device when supported by the device and system.
  • Play recordings directly from document views with compact inline controls.
  • Review the transcript and continue shaping it into ordinary Markdown.

Voice capture is currently centered on the iPhone app; playback is available in supported Letter.md document views.

Product update

Live Photos in Letter.md

Import, view, and publish Live Photos while keeping privacy-sensitive metadata under your control.

Photos in Letter.md can now keep the small moment around the still image.

What changed

  • Import Live Photos through the native iPhone photo picker.
  • Play their motion in supported editor, library, and published-document views.
  • Keep the still image available when motion playback is not supported.
  • Preserve capture time by default.
  • Include precise location only when you explicitly enable it.

Live Photo capture and import are available on supported Apple devices.

Product update

Personal Agent workspace beta

Give longer AI-assisted work a dedicated place, then review document changes in Letter.md.

Letter.md now has a dedicated Agent workspace for work that needs more room than a single editor prompt.

What changed

  • Keep Agent threads separate from the document you are writing.
  • Open proposed document changes in an embedded Letter.md editor.
  • Review suggestions before accepting them instead of applying silent edits.
  • Return to active work from a focused workspace designed for longer tasks.

The Agent workspace is in beta and is currently available only to enabled accounts.

Product update

Prepare publication details with AI

Generate editable suggestions for a public address and description while keeping publishing explicit and existing links stable.

Publication settings can now help prepare the details around a public page without taking over the final decision to publish.

What changed

  • Suggest a short, lowercase public address from the document.
  • Draft a search-friendly description based on the content.
  • Check reserved names and address collisions before publishing.
  • Keep every suggestion editable and require an explicit publish action.
  • Preserve redirects when a supported public address changes.

AI prepares the metadata; the author still reviews and publishes the page.

Product update

Writing streaks and richer activity stats

See writing streaks, published work, and a clearer summary of creative activity over time.

The activity view now reflects more than a raw document count.

What changed

  • See your current and longest writing streak.
  • Count published documents alongside created and updated work.
  • Separate text, image, and document activity where useful.
  • Review activity in personal or workspace context.
  • Keep date calculations aligned with the user's local day instead of server time.

Activity statistics summarize work patterns; they do not make private documents public.

Product update

Capture into Letter.md from anywhere

Create letters from mobile share sheets, system shortcuts, widgets, and document links.

Mobile capture now reduces the distance between noticing something and saving it as Markdown.

What changed

  • Send text, links, and photos to Letter.md from the iOS Share Extension.
  • Use Android's system share action to create a new letter from other apps.
  • Start a new letter or search from iOS Shortcuts, App Intents, the home-screen widget, and Android launcher shortcuts.
  • Open supported Letter.md links in the matching native document.
  • Queue captured content safely when the app or network is not ready.

Shared photos enter the normal Asset upload flow instead of being embedded as fragile temporary URLs.

Product update

Search titles, text, tags, and Assets

Use one permission-scoped search across document titles, excerpts, Markdown bodies, tags, and Assets.

Quick Open now searches the substance of a workspace, not only filenames.

What changed

  • Search document titles, excerpts, full Markdown text, and tags together.
  • Include Asset filenames and metadata in the same result set.
  • Show a matching snippet so you can understand why a result appeared.
  • Combine exact keyword matching with semantic retrieval for harder queries.
  • Fall back to cached titles, excerpts, tags, and Asset names on native clients while offline.
  • Give compatible AI clients the same permission-scoped search boundary.

Search never exposes documents or Assets the current account cannot access.

Product update

Native clients enter beta

Use early native Letter.md clients on iPhone, Android, and macOS with the same Markdown and collaboration model.

Letter.md's native clients now share one document model instead of creating platform-specific copies.

What changed

  • The iPhone app adds native navigation, library, media, settings, and editor controls.
  • The Android app uses native Compose screens around the shared Markdown editor.
  • The macOS app provides a native library and document shell with reviewable AI suggestions.
  • Authentication tokens stay in Keychain or Keystore and are not passed into the editor WebView.
  • Previously synchronized work can reopen from device-local recovery data.

Availability remains limited while signing, distribution, and update workflows are completed for each platform.

Product update

Organize a workspace on Canvas

Arrange documents and folders on an infinite spatial canvas while keeping the underlying workspace intact.

Canvas adds a spatial way to understand a workspace without replacing its folders or Markdown files.

What changed

  • Place document cards and folder frames on an infinite canvas.
  • Pan, zoom, and use the minimap to navigate larger collections.
  • Open the original Letter.md document directly from its card.
  • Share one synchronized layout with workspace collaborators.
  • Preserve pending layout changes locally and retry them after reconnecting.
  • Collapse folder frames when you want a quieter overview.

Canvas is a beta workspace view; moving a card changes the layout, not the document's folder or content.

Product update

Offline editing and portable workspace backups

Reopen synchronized documents offline and export a verifiable workspace archive of Markdown and original Assets.

Letter.md now keeps more of the workspace useful when the network is unreliable and makes the full content set easier to take with you.

What changed

  • Reopen previously synchronized documents while offline.
  • Keep local edits durable and synchronize them after the connection returns.
  • Export a verifiable ZIP containing folders, Markdown, Frontmatter, tags, internal links, and original Assets.
  • Inspect an archive before restoring it.
  • Refuse incomplete or tampered backups without importing partial content.

Offline access depends on the document having synchronized successfully on that device at least once.

Product update

Discover public sites on letter.pub

Browse an index of public Letter.md sites and open each publication at its canonical address.

Public Letter.md sites are now easier to discover from one quiet directory.

What changed

  • letter.pub lists sites that have at least one indexable public document.
  • Site cards link directly to the publisher's canonical address.
  • Photo notes can appear as visual entries without changing their source Markdown.
  • Public feeds, archives, and site introductions help readers understand each collection.
  • Sites with no indexable content stay out of discovery.

Authors still control whether each publication is allowed to appear in search and discovery.

Product update

Tags, nested organization, and smart views

Organize documents with nested tags, combined filters, saved smart views, and bulk actions.

Folders are useful for location; tags now provide a second way to organize work by meaning.

What changed

  • Create colored tags with one level of parent and child organization.
  • Filter by any or all included tags.
  • Exclude tags or focus only on untagged documents.
  • Save useful filter combinations as smart views and pin the ones you use often.
  • Add or remove tags from several selected documents at once.
  • Rename, merge, recolor, and retire tags without rewriting document content.

Tags stay workspace-scoped and complement the existing folder tree.

Product update

Workspaces and real-time collaboration

Invite teammates into a workspace and collaborate on the same Markdown documents, folders, and Assets.

Letter.md workspaces now provide a clear ownership and collaboration boundary for a body of work.

What changed

  • Invite people into a workspace with scoped roles and permissions.
  • Edit the same Markdown document together through real-time collaboration.
  • Keep documents, folders, Assets, publications, and storage under one workspace.
  • Share individual documents or folders without exposing unrelated content.
  • Recover local edits when a connection is interrupted and synchronize them after reconnecting.

Workspace membership and public publishing remain separate permissions.

Product update

Edit Mermaid diagrams with a live preview

Write Mermaid source beside a live diagram preview, with a responsive layout for narrow screens.

Technical diagrams can now stay inside the Markdown document and remain comfortable to edit.

What changed

  • Edit Mermaid source and see the rendered diagram update beside it.
  • Keep source and preview aligned on wide screens.
  • Stack both panes on narrow screens without horizontal overflow.
  • Use the document theme when rendering light and dark diagrams.
  • Save standard Mermaid Markdown that remains readable outside Letter.md.

Invalid source stays editable and shows an error without replacing the last useful diagram.

Product update

Review AI suggestions inside the editor

Let AI propose document edits, then inspect and approve the suggestion before it changes your Markdown.

AI-assisted editing in Letter.md is built around reviewable suggestions rather than invisible writes.

What changed

  • Ask a compatible AI client to work from the current document or selected context.
  • Receive the result as a separate suggestion linked to the source document.
  • Open suggestions in the Letter.md editor to review the proposed Markdown.
  • Apply, revise, or reject the result while keeping the original recoverable.
  • Preserve document context when moving between embedded and full-screen review.

AI clients do not publish documents and do not bypass Letter.md's review boundary.

Product update

Publish a site on letter.pub

Turn a Letter.md workspace into a public site with a hosted letter.pub address and explicit snapshots.

Letter.md can now publish documents as a coherent site instead of a collection of unrelated share links.

What changed

  • The first publication creates a site for the workspace.
  • Every site receives a stable hosted address on letter.pub.
  • Site settings keep the name, introduction, appearance, and public index together.
  • Each document publishes as an explicit read-only snapshot.
  • Public pages include an archive, feed, and sitemap where applicable.

Editing a document never changes the public version silently; publishing an update remains a deliberate action.

Product update

Photo notes and published galleries

Arrange larger photo stories in Letter.md and publish them as responsive, browsable galleries.

Photo notes can now move from a working collection to a public story without rebuilding the layout elsewhere.

What changed

  • Arrange and reorder photos directly in an image document.
  • Build photo grids with more than nine images.
  • Publish photo notes with a responsive grid and focused image viewer.
  • Keep stable image URLs across updates.
  • Preserve titles, descriptions, and Markdown fallbacks alongside the visual layout.

The published page is a snapshot, so later edits stay private until you update the publication.

Product update

Image documents and the Asset library

Keep reusable images as workspace Assets and create photo-first documents that remain portable Markdown.

Letter.md now treats media as reusable workspace content instead of one-off attachments.

What changed

  • Create image documents with a focused photo-first editor.
  • Upload, browse, and reuse images from a shared Asset library.
  • See which documents reference an Asset before removing it.
  • Organize Assets into folders and select several images to start a new document.
  • Store image documents as ordinary Markdown plus original Assets for portability.

Assets belong to the workspace, so the same file can be used safely in more than one document.

Product update

Find, structure, and edit Markdown faster

Use find and replace, collapsible headings, richer table and code controls, and resizable images inside the editor.

A set of focused editing tools now makes longer Markdown documents easier to navigate and refine.

What changed

  • Find and replace text without leaving the document.
  • Collapse heading sections to focus on the part being edited.
  • Add and adjust table rows and columns from contextual controls.
  • Copy code blocks and change their language more quickly.
  • Resize images while preserving the Markdown document.
  • Drop supported document files into the editor to bring their content into the draft.

The tools stay close to the content and appear when they are useful.

Product update

Connect notes with wiki links and backlinks

Link related documents with wiki-style references and see which notes point back to the current document.

Letter.md can now connect related notes in both directions while keeping the relationship readable in Markdown.

What changed

  • Type double square brackets to find and link another document.
  • Create a missing linked note without leaving the editor.
  • Open linked documents directly from the writing surface.
  • See which documents link back to the note you are reading.
  • Keep links portable as familiar wiki-style Markdown text.

Backlinks update the surrounding context without turning the editor into a dense knowledge graph.

Product update

Keep a portable copy in your own R2

Eligible Workspaces can copy Markdown and referenced Assets to a connected Cloudflare R2 bucket.

Eligible Workspaces can now keep a portable copy of their content in a Cloudflare R2 bucket they control.

What changed

  • Connect Cloudflare and choose an account, bucket, and root folder.
  • Copy Markdown and referenced Assets while Letter.md remains the collaboration source.
  • Pause new writes without disconnecting the storage location.
  • Check storage health and reconnect when authorization changes.
  • Prevent silent location changes when existing content depends on the connection.

Custom R2 availability depends on the current plan and Workspace configuration.

Product update

A command-first writing workflow

Open common Workspace and editor actions from one searchable command palette and a consistent shortcut system.

Letter.md now brings common Workspace and editor actions into one searchable command surface.

What changed

  • Open the command palette with Command K on macOS or Control K on Windows and Linux.
  • Create documents, search or quickly open content, show the outline, enter focus mode, and open settings.
  • Discover formatting and navigation shortcuts from the shortcut guide.
  • Use the same underlying actions from menus and the keyboard.
  • Keep commands filtered to what is available in the current context.

The palette speeds up repeat work without making keyboard shortcuts mandatory.

Product update

Cloud documents with short links

Move between synchronized documents without full page reloads, using compact Letter.md links.

Letter.md became a cloud-connected workspace without giving up the speed of local editing.

What changed

  • Cloud documents received stable, compact Letter.md URLs.
  • The library can switch between documents without reloading the whole app.
  • New untitled documents open immediately, then synchronize when the cloud session is ready.
  • Local editor recovery and real-time collaboration converge on the same Markdown document.

Anonymous local editing still works without an account. Sign-in is only needed for cloud sync, sharing, and collaboration.
